Pompei 12 tracce di vita intorno al denaro

The project

The "routes and guidebooks" project by the Italian Numismatic Portal

This theme-based itinerary is being developed in conjunction with the creation of the first virtual Showcases of the Italian Numismatic Portal and comes with the following general purposes:

  • advise visitors about one of many possible routes through a large archaeological site filled with thought-provoking points of interest;
  • bring back to the archaeological sites and areas of discovery materials now stored in Museum showcases and deposits by means of an "integrated" system of promotion and enjoyment and frame them in the context of their original provenance, in addition to their chronological, historical, economic and social contexts;
  • make accessible and usable the important steps of a visiting route, be it theme-based or otherwise, which still retains some traces of important documents;
  • provide the best conditions for usability and learning including by the general public;
  • offer a guidebook and other downloadable documents for real and virtual routes through the archaeological sites, soon to be available on the Italian Numismatic Portal (www.numismaticadellostato.it).

Route 1: Pompei 12

For the first route, Pompeii n. 12 The world of money at Pompeii we plan to do the following:

  • allow visitors by means of special graphic signs to finally "recognize" the sites identified along the route, those that are accessible and those outside the scope of the visit, climbing hypothetically over barriers and protective enclosures;
  • by means of our virtual Showcases, , bring back the archaeological and numismatic materials now kept in the Coin and Medal Collection of the Archaeological Museum of Naples to the same locations where they were originally found;
  • "rediscover" traces of inscriptions and other findings that are evidence of the use of money both for currency and accounting, facilitating their reading and providing translations for visitor selected texts;
  • link these "traces" to a theme-based reading and visiting route, which can then be further studied in its online version on the Italian Numismatic Portal, which will feature additional tools and resources pertaining to the various documents examined during the route.
